When we pulled up to the start of our hike at Hart Creek Canyon near Oreana in the Owyhee Front, Johnpaul grabbed the adventure book and started to read about the hike to us while we ate our packed lunch. Basically, the book said that the hike was one of the most technical and difficult in the book. I may have told him he was crazy and that we needed to leave and find a different hike. He convinced me that we should go as far as we could and then just turn back. I am so glad we went for it! Slot canyons are probably my favorite type of adventures and this one was so beautiful!

While still a difficult hike for Garden Girl and Sunshine Boy, it was less technical because we were there very late in the season and the creek was dry. The hike is definitely back country with no trails, mostly taking place in the creek bed, up rocks and boulders that would normally be under running water. We ended up hiking the whole hike (we did not make the loop, but did it as an out and back). Sunshine boy hiked part of it himself and part on my back. Garden Girl did the whole thing herself with no issues.

The hike was full of adventures – small dark tunnels to crawls through, big rocks to climb up, cross country cutting through sagebrush (the smells were divine), and some scrambles across rock faces.

It was absolutely beautiful.

I would not recommend this hike for young children that are not experienced hikers.
